The Affairs of a poetic Lad: A tale of lover boy

It was his desk, wherein he used to jot down his emotion and event that occurred in his life. He though was not a fan of writing, he still resorted to writing a diary, as he had less contact with the outer world.

It is Delhi; people here are smart, intelligent and advanced. A place which was difficult to make friends for black skin, purple lips and short stature village boy. He neither looked attractive nor spoke the classy language.

People here are intellectuals who prefer to speak in English. It was the most saddening part for him. His name was Ryan Narayan. A boy from Patna, Bihar who came to Delhi to pursue his Masters in journalism.

It was the afternoon of April 19, 2012. He was in his thoughts. The weight of solitude felt heavy on his head. In his head, the dialogue between two girls of his college repeated. The voices echoed.

"Look! so ugly!"

“He has no style. Such an illiterate fellow”.

He wasn't courageous look at them; Somehow, he considered them to be superior.  The moment he was self-pity, the doorbell rang three times. He came back to the real world. He opened the door.

It is his roommate Hemant. He yelled,” idiot! What were you doing?”.

Hemant and Vienna, Hemant’s girlfriend, entered the room.

Ryan immediately kept his apology,” Sorry, I was writing my diary”.

Hemant yelled,” what you consider yourself,’ Wordsworth’, oh! damn you don’t even know who he is”.

Vienna interrupted,” Be easy on him”.

She was feeling sympathy for Ryan, but her sympathies felt like a begged food. He didn’t like it and went inside his room.

Hemant was quite a dominant roommate. He didn’t mind hurting Ryan by pointing at his weak spots. Ryan wanted friends and a girlfriend as he had.

Vienna frequently came to the flat but, Ryan never interacted with her, though her beauty tempted him many times. He always had an excuse to escape either he went to do grocery shopping or cooking food for him and Hemant.

Day by day went by, and it was two weeks of ignoring Vienna, but he somehow decided to talk to her. he waited for her to come with Hemant but, Hemant came alone.

He asked,” you are alone today”.

“Then, whom you were expecting?”, Hemant yelled.

“veena”, he hesitates while her name.

“Oh boy! You like veena”, he teases him,” she doesn’t like you”.

Later that Ryan didn’t eat his dinner. He spent the whole night writing poetry.

The next day, he decided to forget about Vienna and make some friends in college. He tried to reach college early and make some friends but, he had not slept the whole night.

He arrived at the second lecture which, was already started.  He asked permission to enter the lecture hall.  He is permitted but after little insult from the lecturer. Ryan got demotivated.

In the coming three lectures, he silently wrote some painful poems.

The fourth lecture was to be taken by Mrs Bandana Singh. She was the strictest lecturer in the journalism department. On her arrival, the whole class stands up except Ryan. It was a little strange for Mrs Bandana but, she ignored it.

The lecture carried on but, Ryan was busy writing poems. Mrs Bandana ignored him till the end but, she called him before the class ended. She says,” Ryan Narayan, come to the staff room. I need to talk to you".

He got alerted on hearing his name. It scared him. He then needed to meet her in the staff room.

It is time for everyone to leave. The halls started emptying up.  Ryan thought about how he was going to ask for forgiveness.

He hesitatingly went to the staff room and stood in front of Mrs Bandana Singh. He uttered,” I am sorry. I am sorry I did not concentrate in the class”.

There was something so universal in his broken English that Mrs Bandana understood there was something wrong. She uttered,” are you facing some problem in class”.

He uttered,” no”.

“You were busy in writing something. Show me”, she demanded.

“What”, he said.

“Show me your notebook”, she demanded again.

He takes out his notebook. Mrs Bandana goes through it. There were no notes but tragic poems on loneliness.

Mrs Bandana utters in Hindi,” you don’t have friends?”.

He replies,” Yes”.

"Do you know what, your poems are very heart-touching? You shall participate in the poetry competition. I can tell you because I am a poet myself. You are very talented”.

Ryan gets a boost from the conversation he had with her professor. He arrived in his flat. He found his poetry pieces were missing.

The whole he spent thinking who stole the poetry pieces but, he can blame none. It was 7 pm when Hemant arrived. He kept the phone on the dining table and went rushing to the washroom. While he went inside the toilet, Ryan came out room, walked towards the dining table. His eyes fell on the message Hemant had sent to Vienna. Shockingly it was his poetry. He had copied from end to end.

Not just one but, each and every poem was sent to veena but credit was taken by Hemant. He read the chat further and realised that Hemant and Veena were not dating, and Vienna found him a little desperate. It infused more confidence in Ryan. He decided the next day, he will register for the poetry competition.

The next day, he registered and participated in the competition. The jury was impressed by his heart-melting poem. The audience loved him too. He became renowned and also win the competition. Many students from college congratulated and one of them was Veena. He became friends with everyone.

One year later, Vienna proposed to him.

Happily, ever after.
