The lighthouse of Pharos :Lighthouse that brought fame to Egypt

We all know the lighthouse is a tower that guards the ships in the sea, to ensure they do not collapse and collide, but in the 280 BC the seas routes suffered from a lot of shipwrecks and the beautiful piece of architecture that was built merely with a purpose to guide people in sea, became a beacon of hope that saved bigger ship from crashing, as it was not possible to take an immediate turn in the sea, due to its heavy structure.

Egypt that is known for its pyramid in the present time, was also brought to limelight by the egypt its first erected lighthouse, the lighthouse of pharos -- the lighthouse of Pharaoh, which today is one of the ancient wonders of the world today. let us learn about the lighthouse of pharaohs and its origin'.

Lighthouse of pharos

Lighthouse was brought to existence when in the 5th century BC in the european and african continent, when after the death of alexander king Polymerth was trouble by shipwrecks that hampered the sea trade in the greek-roman sea channels,  he order his architects to erect a lighthouse in Alexandria Sostratus was asked to design and construct it; the Lighthouse took two hundred years and two generations of king to erect on island of pharos.

When erected, the lighthouse was a marvel of construction; it was of a length to guide the ships in the  horizon,  covering vast areas assuming the ships can sail effectively even in rough seas possible.

Why was the lighthouse of pharos so special?

The lighthouse was an engineering marvel made by Sostrus; Sostrus while designing the lighthouse layed a map of construction and also created a exterior design that represented the religious practices and fine understanding of the material in the europe.

The lighthouse was built on lime and motor base, with statues of zeus Sostrus in front of the entrance and erecting into a circular white bricked wall, folding inward into an hexagon chamber that protrudes outwards into a furnace, and ended into a blue dome  with the grand statue of Greek god Preside over it.

The fame lighthouse brought to pharos

In 280 BC the Sostratus of Cindrus a greek architect pictured the lighthouse as long building with a furnace, on being commissioned by the king plymouth, Sostratus who was skilled at designing engineering marvels, designed the lighthouse, in form of tower with the glass furnace established on the top of it.

The Sostratus of  Cindrus, a greek architect, pictured the lighthouse as a long building with a furnace at the top radiating light at an angle with the grass shields, to  cover a vast area to ensure the ship can sail effectively even its entering the route from the horizon, because it not only served greek but also other colonized nations nearby, It immediately became a subject of interest and was introduced in the textbook of many countries, and was a independent branch of study called pharology.

Many scholars who visited to practically study the lighthouse explored more about colonized egypt, out of intrest, curiosity and absence of the food resources on the island which was merely limited to the troops, workers and administrators; moreover, the efficiency trade and less mortality on the greek-roman route helped the colonized Egypt to create harmonious ties with other provinces, which remain with the independent Egypt as well.

Construction of lighthouse

When Sostrus he consider the convenience of resident  and protection the lighthouse muay required  for which he divided it into 4 parts of his convenience and survival of person living inside it and also the lighthouse itself was divided into four parts:-

  1. the government bureau: The bottom most was a place for the bureaucrats and reception to receive for welcoming high honors of that time and  the door had statues of zeus stores. that was enclosed in a fortress of the  white bricked walls. The fortress had inner chambers that served as stable for horses and oxen.
  2. The dorm room: The second floor was a 90 feet hexagon dorm constructed inside the tower for the convenience soldier  euler  and administrator of the lighthouse. The dorms were built in a way that they run parallel with the walls of the tower and made room for the staircase, with a void in the middle of the tower to allow  enough room for the circular staircase through which the oxen and oxen carried the liquid fuel to fill the liquid cylinders.
  3. furnace : On the top of the fire, a furnace placed a liquid cylinder .  glass shield and perforated roof and a place to light fire. The perforated roof helped make a route for air to enter which kept the liquid fuel burning all night. The ample amount of fire in  a chamber  could be a hazard which  might burn the lighthouse if  the lot of air entered form perforated; the glass shield  saved the lighthouse from burning and  even allowed the  light spread across the seas  due to  glass facing the sea ensured the light fell from a wide angle.
  4. Dome:  The furnace burned the whole night, and radiating the  light from elevated surface, while the dome resting on the brick and mortar stilts protected the furnace against the storm to keep the glass and furnace from overheating during a storm,  On the top of these  dome stood the statue of poseidon on the top of the lighthouse.

The top of tower radiation enough light to cover the vast area ensuring the ships to sail effectively even its entering the route from the horizon thus gaining popularity and being a remarkable landmark which gave a popularity to egypt, after being an attraction for scientific study,
